Living out Christmas

As I looked upon the many nativities at the bazaar this weekend, I was struck at how no matter how different each looked, the story was clear and the same: hope incarnate, love incarnate, life incarnate, for all people and all nations.

As I looked upon a crowded field house on Thursday night of people and medical supplies, of hope in boxes, on notes, and in hearts, the message again spoke: hope incarnate, love incarnate, life incarnate.

As I spoke with vendors of the people a world away, changing their lives, mending their lives, finding their lives again, the message of the manger resounded its chorus : hope incarnate, love incarnate, life incarnate.

As I heard Pastor Ronn tell of people desiring to give more, to give to those in need in our very own body, to come alongside and carry each other’s burdens, the Sunday message took living form: the abundant life gives itself away and gives itself to the Shepherd.  And in my ears the church’s song rose up again: hope incarnate, love incarnate, life incarnate.

Thank you church.  Thank you for showing me Christmas over and over again. For packing, for giving, for shopping, for baking, for working, for singing its chorus with your lives and proclaiming its message with your deeds: Jesus has come and in Him there is hope, love and life.  And as He showed us from the cradle to the grave, you too embodied from your home, “the abundant life is the one that gives itself away.”  Amen.  Again I say Amen.

Peace,

Cheryl Lynn Cain

Christmas events this week!

The Christmas season has begun, and we hope you are filled with anticipation as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please take some time to relax and reflect on God’s grace and love toward us through the gift of His Son.

I have a lot of news I need to tell you about this week, so please take a minute to read all the details below!

CHRISTMAS GIVING ON SUNDAY
We have been blown away by the generosity of this church the past few weeks as we have prepared for the medical supply kit packing night on Thursday. Thank you, not only for giving above and beyond what we had asked to help supply the kits, but we also have gone over our goal of having 100 people participate in the event.
And yet, people are still asking what they can do to show generosity this Christmas. We aren’t organizing a gift drive this year, as we have in the past. However, we have many people who are in need in our church body. We actually have had more requests for help from our benevolence fund the past few weeks than we have been able to meet.
This Sunday, at the end of the service, we will be taking our regular monthly benevolence offering. If you are still looking for a way to help others at Christmas, please consider making a gift to the benevolence offering. This will be used to help those in our church body who are in need.
We really can’t thank all of you enough for your hearts and the way you care for each other in our church community.

PACKING NIGHT TOMORROW!

If you signed up to help with the AIDS kit packing night tomorrow, you should have received an e-mail from Jessica Overstreet with details about the event. Jessica is the point person for the Justice and Compassion team in setting up this event. If you did NOT receive that information, please e-mail Jessica so she can send you all of the details: j.k.overstreet@comcast.net.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and we will be meeting at the Field House at Bollingbrook HIgh School. We look forward to seeing everyone then!

JUSTICE AND COMPASSION

There are some exciting opportunities this holiday season for our church body to leave comfort for compassion.  Please read below how you can be part beginning soon!

November: Welcoming the Stranger

What better way to celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving than to expand your table to those new to our country? This year, you can! We have partnered with Exodus World Service for their “Expand Your Table” program, pairing church families with newly arrived refugee families in the area. More information is available at the Information Table. Begin praying if this may be a call for your family this Thanksgiving.

December: Caring for the Sick

This year for Christmas we are coming together with the Bolingbrook Association of Churches to bring love and care to the community of Magamba, Tanzania.  If you attended the World Vision Experience: AIDS program, this is the town where many of our churches’ sponsored children live. In response to the AIDS crisis in their town, we are creating AIDS care giver packs for those affected by the virus. The assembly date for these packs will be 7 p.m. Dec. 1, at Bolingbrook High School. However, to have supplies ordered for this event, we will be taking a special offering on Nov. 6. Check out a sample kit at the Info Table and consider how your generosity can reach around the world this Christmas.

CHILD DEDICATION

If you would like to have your child dedicated to the Lord, please sign up at the Info Table. Our next child dedication will be during the worship service on Nov. 20.

Collide begins Sunday

Pastor Ronn is kicking off a new sermon series on Sunday called, “Collide.” What happens when two opposing forces collide? When perseverance meets doubt? Joy meets trials? Truth meets temptation? Doing meets hearing? Love meets favoritism? Or faith meets works? We will be walking through James 1 and 2 as we take a hard-hitting look at what happens at the point where “I end and real faith begins.” You don’t want to miss one week of this five-week series.

If you want to join a small group for the fall, sign-ups begin Sunday! If you are joining a group for the first time or if you are switching groups, stop by the Information Table after the service or go online to sign up for a new group. If you are planning to continue meeting with your current group, you don’t need to do anything. The next small group session will begin the week of Sept. 25. You can download a list of all of the groups from our web site.

FIND YOUR FIT

As we get ready for our new ministry year, we want to help YOU Find Your Fit! This is a great time to learn about all of the ministry areas at The Sanctuary and find out how you can use your gifts and talents to serve the Lord. Whether you love to work behind the scenes, in the kitchen, on stage or by having fun with kids, we have a spot for you to serve at The Sanctuary. Stop by the Information Table before or after service any of the next two weeks to learn more about our ministry areas and where you might Find Your Fit.

PRAY BOLDLY

Back in June, Pastor Ronn challenged our church body to pray boldly as we approach our Annual Meeting on Sept. 11. As a follow-up, Pastor Ben asked us to share our “Whale of a Tale” of what God is doing in our lives. We want to share those stories of how God has answered prayers in our church at the meeting. Pastor Ronn also asked us to pray boldly that God would open a door for us to find land or a building space. If you missed Pastor Ronn’s challenge, you can check our his message on our YouTube channel, listen on our web site or read about it on our blog. If you have a story to share, please write it down and give it to a staff member or e-mail it to us.

ANNUAL MEETING

Our Annual Meeting is at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at Alpha Baptist Church, 240 S. Schmidt Road. The purpose of the meeting is to seek congregational approval of the new budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. We also will approve new members, elders, a person on the nominating committee and our treasurer.  Anyone who attends our church is welcome to attend the annual meeting, but only members can vote.
